Frequently asked questions
Usually, once it hosts tournaments, spectators or large groups. That brings a fire-marshal plan check under the Florida Fire Prevention Code on top of the building permit under the Florida Building Code, and normally a local site-plan or zoning step. The steel itself is engineered for your property's design wind speed and exposure, on sealed drawings. Confirm the occupancy and reviews with the county or city before design gets far.
For early budgeting, yes. When a Florida agency needs design work, it picks the design professionals through the Consultants' Competitive Negotiation Act, and the building contract is usually let by bid, so the real purchase follows the agency's own procurement rules. Facilities open to the public also carry ADA requirements for routes, seating and restrooms.
It varies a lot. Pickleball can work under a lower roof than volleyball, and volleyball, badminton and indoor soccer all ask for more open height than most warehouses have. Governing bodies and leagues publish their own recommended minimums, so check the ones for the level of play you plan to host and measure under the lowest light, beam or duct.
The lines of a pickleball court are 20 by 44 feet, but each court also needs open space behind the baselines and beside the sidelines, plus walkways and divider nets between courts. Lay out the full playing area per court first, then size the building around the number you want, rather than dividing a footprint by the size of the lines.
A clear-span frame keeps the whole field open but costs more as the width grows. A multi-span frame adds interior columns that bring the steel cost down; on a turf field they have to be padded and placed where they interfere least with play. Many owners price both before deciding.
Hard courts and sport tile need a flat, level slab with a moisture barrier. Turf can go on a slab with a shock pad or on a prepared base, depending on the product and the sport. Choose the surface before the foundation is designed, because it changes the slab, the drainage and the finished floor height.
Yes, if it is planned for. A steel building can be designed with an expandable endwall so more courts or field length can be added in matching bays, as long as the lot, setbacks and parking leave room for the addition.
